Your Canine's
Sense of Smell

A much larger part of a dog’s brain is devoted to processing smells than yours. Some search dogs locate people buried under the snow of avalanches, search for evidence in crime, and find people in the water. Cloudy days, mornings, and evenings are the best times for dogs to search. And depending on the conditions, dogs can pick up a scent up to a half a mile away!

Is Boarding Your Dog or Puppy an Option?

If you’re reading this book, you’re probably anticipating a time when you may need to leave your dog behind while you’re on a trip. No matter how much we love our pets, sometimes we have to travel for business, visit people who don’t want dogs around, or take a vacation. Whether you need to board your dog on a regular basis or in case of emergency trips, you have some tough decisions to make. What does your dog need to be happy and safe? What precautions should you take when choosing a kennel? How can you tell a good kennel from a

bad one? And what types of training will increase your dog’s chance for having a pleasant boarding experience? This book was written to address your concerns, answer your questions, and educate you about the niceties of boarding your dog.

Except in special cases, boarding is usually considered as a last resort. Having a friend stay at your home with your pets while you’re away is one possibility. It’s cheaper than a kennel, and your dog will be comfortable in his own house. For dogs who don’t like the company of other animals, or aggressive types, this is an ideal choice. If you have a friend who likes dogs and doesn’t mind packing up and moving for a few days or a couple of weeks, this could be the solution for you. But you always need a backup plan, in case your friend’s plans suddenly change. Bear in mind that friendships have suffered over house and dog-sitters who come down with the flu or need to leave town themselves the day before your trip is scheduled! Take the pressure off everyone by checking out potential kennels in your area.
