Your Canine's Sense of Smell
A much larger part of a dog’s brain is devoted to processing smells than yours. Some search dogs locate people buried under the snow of avalanches, search for evidence in crime, and find people in the water. Cloudy days, mornings, and evenings are the best times for dogs to search. And depending on the conditions, dogs can pick up a scent up to a half a mile away!

Many Dog Boarding Kennels Offer Luxury Services for Your Dog
Kennels offer a variety of services, and some of them are downright elegant. Others are practical and useful and worth the additional cost. You may decide to arrange extra walks or playtimes for your dog with the kennel staff, and the extra half-hour of daily attention can often be had for a very reasonable rate. If your dog likes to be brushed, you may choose extra grooming sessions. Some kennels have shallow pools for dogs to splash around in, and if your dog loves to be bathed, that’s an option too.

Updating your dog’s obedience skills may be possible during his stay: some kennels offer training sessions. If you decide to spring for extra training, make sure the trainer is experienced, and inquire as to the methods she uses (better yet, ask to see an actual training session). Some kennels will pick your dog up and return him to you so you have one less detail to take care of before your own trip. If you can’t squeeze in a trip to the kennel, this is an option, but it complicates things in that, instead of you bringing your dog and his stuff to the kennel, you may be handing him over to a stranger at the door. This could be upsetting to a dog who is used to only traveling with you. If you think you’ll be using the pick-up and drop-off service, get your dog used to visiting the kennel first. Drive him there yourself (after you’ve thoroughly checked it out alone) and let him meet the staff. Ask a friend or hire a pet-sitter to pick him up and take him for a fun walk at the dog-park, so he gets used to leaving home with other people. Now, when the kennel folk arrive, he’ll be excited and happy to have another adventure.
