Your Canine's Sense of Smell
A much larger part of a dog’s brain is devoted to processing smells than yours. Some search dogs locate people buried under the snow of avalanches, search for evidence in crime, and find people in the water. Cloudy days, mornings, and evenings are the best times for dogs to search. And depending on the conditions, dogs can pick up a scent up to a half a mile away!

Doggy Day Care - Dog-Sitters, Walkers and Watchers
If you are concerned that you really don’t have the time to
take adequate care of your dog, you still have options. Hire
a responsible neighborhood kid to walk him every day (unless
your dog has aggression problems). Kids who like dogs will
probably give you more for your money, being likely to hang
around and play with or pet your dog in addition to walking
him. Trade pet-setting with friends, so your pet has daily
or twice-daily visits from concerned others. Find a good
doggie day-care— some will include grooming services or even
pickup and drop-off.

You might even ask a friend who already has dogs to dog sit at
her house on a regular basis: your dog can have play-dates
there!
Be creative about your own routines – maybe you could be taking your dog with you more often than you’ve thought. If you usually run errands after work and before returning home, you may decide to go home first, collect your dog and have him ride along to pick up the kids from school or to get dry-cleaning and groceries. It may cost you another twenty minutes in time, but it is strengthening the bond between you and your pet by giving you more time together (even if it is in the car).
If your dog has a sweet temperament, you might be able to partner with a senior citizen’s home to let him work as a therapy dog. With a trustworthy volunteer handler overseeing him, your dog may spend time with aged folk, who will appreciate having a dog to pet and talk to. Research has shown that spending time with a pet is good for the immune system and lifts the mood as well: an older neighbor might be the solution to your pet-sitting needs.
Final Word
Stay-at-home dogs can still enjoy a quality of life that meets all their socialization needs: it takes some planning and readjustment, on your part, but it can certainly be done! When your dog is happy, you’ll be happy, and you’ll spend less time cleaning up messes (or assuaging neighbors) and more time having fun together. More enthusiastic than a cat, more interesting than any goldfish, your dog will add to your own quality of life through the relationship, trust and companionship you build together. What a nice thing to come home to!
