Your Canine's Sense of Smell
A much larger part of a dog’s brain is devoted to processing smells than yours. Some search dogs locate people buried under the snow of avalanches, search for evidence in crime, and find people in the water. Cloudy days, mornings, and evenings are the best times for dogs to search. And depending on the conditions, dogs can pick up a scent up to a half a mile away!

Keep You and Your Dog Healthy by Exercising Together
Some dogs such as toy breeds, don’t need much exercise, but
most dogs need a daily walk or twenty or thirty minutes of
exuberant play time. Dogs that were originally bred for
hunting, sporting or working may need some serious exercise
to rid themselves of extra nervous energy. In general, dogs
are like people, and when it comes to exercise, more is
better. Make time daily to walk, play or work with your dog.
Use your own need for exercise as a excuse to break out the
leash and walking shoes, and take

your dog for a brisk, daily half-hour walk. Go to the park and
play ball, or teach your dog to catch a Frisbee when you throw
it. If your dog likes the water and the weather permits it, let
him fetch sticks or tennis balls by swimming out to get them. Swimming in salt water is a tried and true natural method of preventing fleas. However, if your dog’s coat is very thick, or the oily type of coat some retrievers have, it may be fairly water-proof. Salt-water swimming leaves some dogs smelling like a wet dog, so they get a bath and a flea-dip afterwards, which is especially good for getting rid of fleas!
A note on water safety:it’s
fine to swim with your dog, but never allow him to climb up
into your arms or on your shoulders in the water. People have
been drowned by their dogs, who just thought they were playing
a game. Also, even though your dog may be a strong swimmer,
take the same precautions against too-cold water, fatigue,
currents or rip tides that you would if you were swimming in
that same area.
When biking with your dog, keep in mind that he may get
tired faster than you do. Let him get a good run, but remember
that a bike can hit thirty miles an hour, and don’t overdo it.
Make sure your dog can take a break for a drink of water just
as you would during heavy exercise.
Like people, dogs suffer when they don’t get enough exercise. Aside from the physical health benefits, exercise keeps both you and your dog in a better mood, less susceptible to depression and anxiety, and more likely to get restful, uninterrupted sleep at night. Make sure your dog gets at least fifteen minutes of vigorous exercise each day: thirty to forty-five minutes is optimal.
