Your Canine's
Sense of Smell

A much larger part of a dog’s brain is devoted to processing smells than yours. Some search dogs locate people buried under the snow of avalanches, search for evidence in crime, and find people in the water. Cloudy days, mornings, and evenings are the best times for dogs to search. And depending on the conditions, dogs can pick up a scent up to a half a mile away!

How Are Dog Fed While Being Boarded in a Kennel?

Dogs need routine, and many dogs can’t tolerate an abrupt change in food: they get finicky, refuse to eat or overeat like crazy, or they just get sick. While you’re looking at kennels, find out what kind of dog chow they serve, and either make arrangements to bring your dog’s food along, or gradually get your dog used to the new food by first mixing it little by little with his current chow, then reducing the current chow a bit each meal until he’s weaned onto the new dog chow. You should probably take between

one and two weeks to completely make the switch. If your dog has a particular stomach or food allergies, it’s easier just to let the kennel know that you’ll be bringing his chow.

Make sure that kennel staff make prominent notes to that effect, so there are no nasty surprises!

Summary

  1. Bring your dog's own food if the kennel allows it.

  2. If not, acclimate your dog to the kennel's food by gradually switching him over.

  3. Make sure there are reminders to staff to feed your dog a particular food, and note any allergies.
