Your Canine's Sense of Smell
A much larger part of a dog’s brain is devoted to processing smells than yours. Some search dogs locate people buried under the snow of avalanches, search for evidence in crime, and find people in the water. Cloudy days, mornings, and evenings are the best times for dogs to search. And depending on the conditions, dogs can pick up a scent up to a half a mile away!

Hiring a Professional Dog Sitter – What to Consider
Less complicated but a little riskier is hiring a
professional pet-sitter. For a fee, a bonded pet-sitter will
come to your house every day to feed, walk, groom and play
with your dog. Make sure this person is bonded, so that if
find an unscrupulous sitter, you’ll be able to recoup the
stolen silverware! Fees range from very reasonable to
totally outrageous, and different companies provide
different levels of service. Ask your vet for
recommendations.

You should definitely schedule a “meet-n-greet” between the pet-sitter, and yourself at home, so your dog can get acquainted with the person who will be caring for him. Start this process several weeks before you go, in case you don’t immediately take to the first pet-sitter you meet. Make sure the sitter has all the information about your dog’s food, medicine, allergies or illnesses, parasite prevention, vet, routines and habits, good and bad. If your dog is very anxious or gets aggressive in dealing with strangers, pet-sitting may not be the best option for him.
