Your Canine's Sense of Smell
A much larger part of a dog’s brain is devoted to processing smells than yours. Some search dogs locate people buried under the snow of avalanches, search for evidence in crime, and find people in the water. Cloudy days, mornings, and evenings are the best times for dogs to search. And depending on the conditions, dogs can pick up a scent up to a half a mile away!

How Clean Should a Pet Boarding Facility Be?
One of the most important things about a kennel is that the staff understand and take care to prevent the health risks associated with boarding animals. Your dog’s kennel should require up-to-date vaccinations and proof of current parasite-control measures for all visiting animals. If a dog arrives at the kennel with ticks, ear mites, worms or fleas, the kennel staff should either refuse to board the animal, or should have an established procedure that not only provides for eradicating the parasites, but also prevents them from spreading to other animals while the dog undergoes treatment.

Because disease is also spread through feces and urine, it’s important that the kennel cleans up after the animals, in their individual pens and in common areas. Bedding, toys and crates should be sanitized on a regular basis, and if you bring your dog’s own crate, bedding or toys to the kennel, the kennel should sanitize them as your pet is checking out. (If the kennel doesn’t provide that service, expect to bring a clean crate when you pick up your dog, and bring a large plastic garbage bag to put the unsanitized one in before you bring it home to clean. ) Dogs can also catch diseases from each other they way people do – from saliva. It is possible for dogs to be carriers of illness but to be symptom-free, so that your dog might pick up a sickness through no particular fault of the kennel. By the same token, your dog is also exposed to other dog’s germs every time he takes a walk, so although you want to know that the kennel has disease-prevention measures securely in place, there’s only so much anyone can do.
What is the kennel’s procedure when a dog becomes ill while
the owner is away? Ideally, the kennel should have a working
relationship with one or more veterinarians, who can provide
day and emergency treatment. Also, kennels should be prepared
to give your dog medicine if he becomes ill while boarding.
Summary

Dogs can still catch airborne illnesses that kennels can't control.
