Your Canine's Sense of Smell
A much larger part of a dog’s brain is devoted to processing smells than yours. Some search dogs locate people buried under the snow of avalanches, search for evidence in crime, and find people in the water. Cloudy days, mornings, and evenings are the best times for dogs to search. And depending on the conditions, dogs can pick up a scent up to a half a mile away!

What Dogs Bark At
Let’s cover circumstances known to cause barking. Dogs may
bark when people are passing by or coming to the door, when
loud equipment or specific automobiles drive by (I have a
cat who is fascinated with garbage trucks. He runs to the
window and watches with great interest every time one of
these behemoths drives up the street). Dogs bark atthings
they see and/or hear that make them feel excited,
territorial, frightened or angry. Sometimes all you have to
do is prevent the dog from seeing whatever it is that sets
him off. Close the curtains, build a fence or move the

dog to another spot. For a dog who barks at what he
cannot see, you may want to drill a couple of eye holes
in the obstructing fence so he can keep an eye on what’s
going on. Take a moment to think about how you would
feel in your dog's living situation, and then try making
simple changes in his environment. Sometimes that’s all
you need!
Finally, we get psychological. Is your dog bored,
lonely, anxious or scared, too needy, high-strung,
obsessive?
